Crew handover and pre-tour checks template

We use a one-page handover sheet at crew change for the driller and AD that covers 12–1/4 in hole parameters, active mud weight/volumes, BOP test date, choke manifold line-up, open permits, and any SIMOPS, posted on the doghouse wall. I’ll take the blank — on our last well we squeezed torque into a 1-inch sparkline with a thin baseline and a big R/A/G arrow so I could say “Torque vs baseline: up 8% last 3 stands” and move on. For NPT, we just add one line “tag + clock time” (e.g., “shaker repairs 0.7 hr”) with a small QR to the EDR trend; works fast, but it’s junk if the EDR isn’t synced. Keeps the toolpusher from squinting at tiny numbers.

Quick example from our last pad: we added a small ‘Torque/NPT strip’ at the top — one sparkline, one line that reads ‘Δ torque vs baseline: +6%’ and a single NPT note like ‘NPT: slips sticking — 35 min last tour’ — and I can brief in an elevator ride. We also put a QR to the live torque trend so the page stays clean, but if comms hiccup keep a pen-and-paper fallback. Send the blank and I’ll share our strip layout.

We laminated ours and added a 2-inch header band on the doghouse sheet. For torque on 12–1/4 in, we just show an up/flat/down arrow, 60‑min average and last peak (e.g., ↑ 12.4 kft‑lb avg / 14.1 peak), and NPT is a single badge like ‘NPT 25 min – motor stalls @ 12,730 ft,’ which keeps the brief under 3 minutes. If you want deeper trend like @connorG90, stick a small QR to the rig data plot, but keep the wall copy china-marker writable or it turns into a poster nobody updates.

What helped us hit the 3‑minute brief was a tiny “Since last tour” box between the 12–1/4 in hole params and SIMOPS: write “Torque change (last hour): +0.8 kft·lb over expected” and “NPT: 25 min — pump liner swap,” big enough to read off the doghouse wall… Only caveat: on motor runs I tag it “motor‑in‑hole” so folks don’t chase surface torque noise.
